Pioneering Feats - Past and Present
"Skiing is the easiest thing in the world" said Arlberg-born Hannes Schneider, one of the leading ski pioneers. He is considered one of the masterminds of the famous Arlberg ski technique.
The first ski course for visitors was held in Zürs in 1906. In 1907, the first ski lift was constructed at the Bödele near Dornbirn. This was still a very simple, boat-like, mechanic contraption. The first "proper" drag lift went into operation in Zürs in 1938. The first ski schools of Vorarlberg opened in 1925 in Lech am Arlberg and in Mittelberg in the Kleinwalsertal.
The art of skiing: Vorarlberg's currently 1,950 ski instructors are ‘ambassadors' of contemporary skiing. They have refining skiing techniques and set new standards in instructing children. Today, 39 ski schools offer a wide range of different courses with ever new elements, for snow kids, daredevils, free-riders, comeback skiers, or innovative programmes like the ones of Ski! project in Au-Schoppernau, which combines elements from dance with the art of skiing.
Non-German speaking guests benefit from the many ski instructors with foreign language skills
High tech for even more convenience: Headquartered in Wolfurt near Bregenz, the international Doppelmayr group is at the cutting edge of ropeway engineering. Its latest innovations include the first ever heatable chairlifts, which have been in operation in a number of ski resorts in Vorarlberg.
Vorarlberg has also garnered an international reputation as a manufacturer of artificial snow-making equipment, which has become near-ubiquitous in winter sports. Many facilities in the Alps, but also in Japan and even in China, came from Sufag, a company based in Kennelbach near Bregenz.
Private skiing or snowboard instruction is the most efficient and intensive way of improving quickly at your sport-art. Treat yourself! Either just for you or together with your family or friends.
