The women’s museum in Hittisau is the only one of its kind in Austria and makes artistic creation by women and their living environments visible in changing exhibitions. The museum is accommodated in a modern timber building in the village centre. For a long time, mountaineering was a male domain. The exhibition showcases pioneering female alpinists of the 19th and 20th centuries. At the same time, it directs attention to women who have always lived and worked in the mountains: high-alpine farming women, herdswomen, female poachers, smugglers and mountain guides.
The Christmas market in the city centre offers visitors the ability to buy at one of the 60 market stalls innovative presents. Furthermore, the market presents live music of choirs, soul and gospel ensembles, theatre, an ice rink, pony riding, and a Christmas tree with more than 20,000 lights!
During the period of the "Schwarzenberger Advent" are plenty of interesting things to listen to, experience and discover: Poetry readings accompanied by festive meals, exhibitions and the advent market in the heritage-protected village centre as well as a children’s programme and concert in the Baroque church, etc.
Musical highlights, party fun at the winter season opening, crib exhibitions, charming markets, concerts, stories and poems take the visitors on a journey into the unique atmosphere from the eleven villages of the Montafon.
